 Not a dry eye in the house as Al Wasl Plaza’s magnificent closing ceremony revisits some of Expo 2020 most memorable moments

 

DUBAI, 31 March 2022 – A moment of huge pride for the United Arab Emirates and the world, the moving Closing Ceremony on Thursday (31 March) at Expo 2020 Dubai’s breathtaking Al Wasl Plaza, was a celebration of everything the event has achieved – and of all those who made it happen.

 

With a creative team led by Franco Dragone, one of the world’s greatest creative visionaries, the Closing Ceremony reflected how Expo 2020 Dubai has touched the lives of all who have visited, while heightening the myriad of memories made on site. A world-class production, pioneering technology, immersive laser projectors, emotive music and no less than three firework displays all worked together to heighten the spectacle.

 

The final chapter of the six-month extravaganza was attended by His Highness Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, His Excellency Sheikh Nahayan bin Mubarak Al Nahayan, Minister of Tolerance and Coexistence and Commissioner General of Expo 2020 Dubai, and Her Excellency Reem Al Hashimy, Minister of State for International Cooperation and Director General, Expo 2020 Dubai.

 

HE Sheikh Nahayan, Minister of Tolerance and Coexistence said: “We were honoured to have welcomed millions of visitors from all around the world, as the UAE has always been a place where all people meet. Throughout Expo 2020 Dubai’s six months, we had the honour of meeting many delegations, officials, and visitors. We celebrated with national days here – at the heart of Expo 2020 Dubai – on our beloved UAE’s land; the land of tolerance, coexistence, and peace. Among our most important guests were the generations of the future, particularly hundreds of thousands of our visitors, who were hosted by the Expo School Programme. They are the agents of positive change that we want for a more sustainable, safer, better world for all.

 

“We have learned a lot together, and we have proved that humans are of one essence, and one fate. We have come together at an extremely difficult time, the likes of which the world has not seen, embodying the strength of human will, at its finest, and made Expo 2020 Dubai a symbol of hope.”

 

A children’s choir kicked off proceedings with Ishy Bilady, the UAE National anthem, before the handing over the flag to the next World Expo hosts: Wakamiya Kenji, Minister for the World Expo 2025, and Yoshimura Hirofumi, Governor of Osaka Prefecture.

 

As guests and performers gathered in the garden of Al Wasl one last time, celebrated cellist Yo-Yo Ma gave an emotional performance of Gabriel’s Oboe followed by Going Home, before Al Wasl Dome was transformed into a galaxy of stars.

 

With singers and the Firdaus Orchestra performing the Expo 2020 Dubai theme song, This is our Time, an undeniable highlight of the show was the underwater scene with dancers waving huge swirling blue sheets which were then opened – in perfectly synchronised fashion – to reveal the 192 flags of the participating countries, creating a circle of flags representing the world and everyone standing together.

 

Mira Singh, the young star of the Expo 2020 Dubai opening ceremony, was again the heartbeat of the show, responsible for returning the ring with its magical powers to where it originated, to be ready for the next generation. Her journey included flashbacks of Expo 2020 Dubai’s highlights, including fleeting sequences of Al Adiyat: The Story of a Boy and His Horse, the Flying Piano, yoga at Surreal, the Expo Explorer’s final journey, dancing with Opti the robot, and an astronaut flying into space from Journey of the 50.

 

As the huge golden ring descended from the top of Al Wasl Dome, Grammy award-winning singer and songwriter, Norah Jones, appeared at a grand white piano to sing As Tears Go By. With another round of spellbinding fireworks, pop icon Christina Aguilera rounded off the show in spectacular fashion, belting out a stunning rendition of The Greatest Showman’s A Million Dreams.

 

Given the theme of the show, it was no surprise that the ‘VIP guests’ were made up of public and private school children from across the UAE. All aged between seven and nine, the pure, unadulterated joy on their faces throughout the one-hour performance was as stirring as the performance itself.

Sarova Hotels to cease management of Spirit of the Masai Mara_October 31, 2019

In Summary• Sarova Hotels & Resorts has announced a plan to cease management of the Spirit of the Masai Mara starting November.

• Managing Director, Jimi Kariuki said as such from November 1, the property will no longer be a member of the Sarova Hotels Signature Collection brand.

Sarova Hotels & Resorts has announced its plan to cease management of the Spirit of the Masai Mara starting November.
In a press statement sent to newsrooms on Wednesday, the hotel said the move follows a mutual he Sarova Hotels Signature Collection brand.
Sarova took over management of the lodge located within the Siana Conservancy in the Maasai Mara in April 2018.
According to the statement, Spirit of the Masai Mara will continue to focus on wildlife conservation in close cooperation with the World Wildlife Fund.
“The agreement to discontinue Sarova’s management of the lodge is mutual between us and the lodge owners, the McCarthy family,”  Kariuki said.
“Sarova will continue to have a strong presence in the Masai Mara Game Reserve through our tented lodge Sarova Mara Game Camp.”
He dispelled fears that with the move, the agreement will affect any of the current Spirit of the Masai Mara employees.
“Sarova employees who were deployed to Spirit of the Masai Mara will be retained by Sarova Hotels and employees of Spirit of the Masai Mara will be retained by the lodge,” he said.
Kariuki said Sarova Hotels, through their Central Reservations Office in Nairobi will continue to manage all bookings for the lodge up to October 31, 2019.
According to him, for all future bookings and correspondence, Spirit of the Masai Mara can be reached at info@spiritofthemasaimara.com.
Spirit of the Masai Mara consists of 10 solidly built air-conditioned suites, uniquely blending modern design and traditional building materials.

Kampala (Dec 19/19). As part of the Plan for the Promotion of Colombia Abroad, the Colombian Embassy in Kenya held in Kampala, Uganda, the First Film and Documentary Exhibition of Colombia: Moving images and ethnic voices of a biodiverse country.

Ambassador Elizabeth Taylor Jay held preparatory meetings on December 4 with the Director of Protocol and Public Diplomacy of the Uganda Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Charles Ssentongo, and with the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Mr. Henry Oryem Okello. KWS captures lion after a one month search- Photos

Kenya Wildlife Services (KWS) rangers have captured a male lion from Hellsgate National Park in Naivasha after a one month search.

It’s suspected that the animal is part of a pack of lions that escaped from Lake Nakuru National Park a couple of months ago and have been terrorising residents of nearby villages.

The capture comes barely a fortnight after the lions attacked and killed three herds of cattle in Narasha area and injured six others.

The lions are suspected to have also killed tens of livestock in Eburru, Soysambu and Moi Ndabi areas leaving area residents in fear.

In the latest incident, KWS officers were tipped by members of pUBLIC who had spotted the lion before it was captured.

A herder Moses Ole Lekopor said that they had spotted the lion on two different occasions loitering near their manyattas which are located next to the park.

He said that the lions had left them in fear as they roared at night near their homes targeting their livestock.

“We are happy that KWS has managed to capture one of the lions and we hope that the others will be seized as we are living in fear,” he said.

Earlier, the rangers had captured two leopards in Maraigushu area of Naivasha and driven them back to the national park.

The leopards are suspected to have killed tens of goats and sheep in the village before traps were laid to capture them.

An elder in the village Joshua Gitau said that there were tens of wild animals in the area which had killed and maimed livestock.

Gitau praised the move to capture the two leopards but challenged KWS to address the issue of compensation adding that many families had been affected by the wildlife attacks.

“We have lost tens of livestock to leopards attack but no single family has been compensated and its time KWS addressed this,” he said.

A senior KWS officer who is not authorized to speak to the press confirmed the capture of the lion saying that it had been relocated back to Lake Nakuru National Park.

“We are in the process of tracking the other lions which have been spotted around Narasha area while the two leopards were released back to Hellsgate National Park,” said the officer.
