Safaricom PLC February 2023 News Letter

February 2023 Newsletter

It’s February, and this month we celebrate all things love. Love for technology, love for animals and everything in between.

Fun fact. Did you know that in 2021, Roan Antelopes in the quiet Ruma National Park in Homa Bay County, were only 14 across the entire sanctuary? But, in just two years, the number has increased to 25. Find out more about this endangered species population in this month’s newsletter.

We share an interesting gem that highlights marathon star Eliud Kipchoge’s story on how technology is key in pushing him to reach and even surpass his set goals. The best statement to summarize this piece is in his own famous words, “No human is limited.”

Still on tech, read about the 2023 innovations that we can’t wait to see make a huge impact on how we live our lives by bringing forth solutions to living simpler lives.

Two young innovators, Brian and Diana, tell us about their valuable contribution to the field of science, one of which won them an award at the Young Scientists Kenya competition.

Finally, in line with data privacy day which is commemorated on the 28th of January, we have a story on why less is more when it comes to personal data and protecting yourself from fraudsters. These tips might just come in handy as you browse the internet.

As always, enjoy your read and feel free to share with your networks.

Since the start of the project in 2021, the partnership developed strategies to ensure that the endangered species are cared for and increase in number. Two years on, the KWS have successfully limited predation, which was one of the biggest reasons for the decline of the Roan antelopes.

It's a new Era where we need to Uphold our Dignity and humanity of our People with real promises, our current economy can't allow our people to Survive on ksh. 4,000 a day, thats why we need to create a platform that will allow our people to win their daily bread."

Closure of the 6 Months Dubai Expo 2020:Al Wasl Plaza Made the Final day!

Not a dry eye in the house as Al Wasl Plaza’s magnificent closing ceremony revisits some of Expo 2020 most memorable moments

DUBAI, 31 March 2022 – A moment of huge pride for the United Arab Emirates and the world, the moving Closing Ceremony on Thursday (31 March) at Expo 2020 Dubai’s breathtaking Al Wasl Plaza, was a celebration of everything the event has achieved – and of all those who made it happen.

With a creative team led by Franco Dragone, one of the world’s greatest creative visionaries, the Closing Ceremony reflected how Expo 2020 Dubai has touched the lives of all who have visited, while heightening the myriad of memories made on site. A world-class production, pioneering technology, immersive laser projectors, emotive music and no less than three firework displays all worked together to heighten the spectacle.

The final chapter of the six-month extravaganza was attended by His Highness Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, His Excellency Sheikh Nahayan bin Mubarak Al Nahayan, Minister of Tolerance and Coexistence and Commissioner General of Expo 2020 Dubai, and Her Excellency Reem Al Hashimy, Minister of State for International Cooperation and Director General, Expo 2020 Dubai.

HE Sheikh Nahayan, Minister of Tolerance and Coexistence said: “We were honoured to have welcomed millions of visitors from all around the world, as the UAE has always been a place where all people meet. Throughout Expo 2020 Dubai’s six months, we had the honour of meeting many delegations, officials, and visitors. We celebrated with national days here – at the heart of Expo 2020 Dubai – on our beloved UAE’s land; the land of tolerance, coexistence, and peace. Among our most important guests were the generations of the future, particularly hundreds of thousands of our visitors, who were hosted by the Expo School Programme. They are the agents of positive change that we want for a more sustainable, safer, better world for all.

“We have learned a lot together, and we have proved that humans are of one essence, and one fate. We have come together at an extremely difficult time, the likes of which the world has not seen, embodying the strength of human will, at its finest, and made Expo 2020 Dubai a symbol of hope.”

A children’s choir kicked off proceedings with Ishy Bilady, the UAE National anthem, before the handing over the flag to the next World Expo hosts: Wakamiya Kenji, Minister for the World Expo 2025, and Yoshimura Hirofumi, Governor of Osaka Prefecture.

As guests and performers gathered in the garden of Al Wasl one last time, celebrated cellist Yo-Yo Ma gave an emotional performance of Gabriel’s Oboe followed by Going Home, before Al Wasl Dome was transformed into a galaxy of stars.

With singers and the Firdaus Orchestra performing the Expo 2020 Dubai theme song, This is our Time, an undeniable highlight of the show was the underwater scene with dancers waving huge swirling blue sheets which were then opened – in perfectly synchronised fashion – to reveal the 192 flags of the participating countries, creating a circle of flags representing the world and everyone standing together.

Mira Singh, the young star of the Expo 2020 Dubai opening ceremony, was again the heartbeat of the show, responsible for returning the ring with its magical powers to where it originated, to be ready for the next generation. Her journey included flashbacks of Expo 2020 Dubai’s highlights, including fleeting sequences of Al Adiyat: The Story of a Boy and His Horse, the Flying Piano, yoga at Surreal, the Expo Explorer’s final journey, dancing with Opti the robot, and an astronaut flying into space from Journey of the 50.

As the huge golden ring descended from the top of Al Wasl Dome, Grammy award-winning singer and songwriter, Norah Jones, appeared at a grand white piano to sing As Tears Go By. With another round of spellbinding fireworks, pop icon Christina Aguilera rounded off the show in spectacular fashion, belting out a stunning rendition of The Greatest Showman’s A Million Dreams.

Given the theme of the show, it was no surprise that the ‘VIP guests’ were made up of public and private school children from across the UAE. All aged between seven and nine, the pure, unadulterated joy on their faces throughout the one-hour performance was as stirring as the performance itself.

Independence Day-Colombia

Colombian Declaration of Independence

All Colombians Globally will be marking the Colombian Independence this week,20th July 2021, Tuesday.

This year's event coincidentally happens on the same date as Muslims Eid Ul Adha.

The Colombian Embassy in Kenya is set to  Commemorate the day, being a public holiday in Kenya as well.

All Covid-19 Guidelines and Protocols will be highly observed.

Brief History

The Colombian Declaration of Independence refers to the events of July 20, 1810, in Santa Fe de Bogota, in the Spanish colonial Viceroyalty of New Granada.

They resulted in the establishment of a Junta de Santa Fe that day. The experience in self-government eventually led to the creation of the Republic of Colombia.

(Note: The initial ambitious area, in accordance with the Viceroyalty of New Granada and Captaincy of Venezuela, included much more than current Colombia; to differentiate it, historians call this supra-nation: Republic of Gran Colombia.)

Wishing All Colombians a Wonderful Independence Day Week ahead!

Junta de Santa Fe that day.
