Closure of the 6 Months Dubai Expo 2020:Al Wasl Plaza Made the Final day!

Not a dry eye in the house as Al Wasl Plaza’s magnificent closing ceremony revisits some of Expo 2020 most memorable moments

DUBAI, 31 March 2022 – A moment of huge pride for the United Arab Emirates and the world, the moving Closing Ceremony on Thursday (31 March) at Expo 2020 Dubai’s breathtaking Al Wasl Plaza, was a celebration of everything the event has achieved – and of all those who made it happen.

With a creative team led by Franco Dragone, one of the world’s greatest creative visionaries, the Closing Ceremony reflected how Expo 2020 Dubai has touched the lives of all who have visited, while heightening the myriad of memories made on site. A world-class production, pioneering technology, immersive laser projectors, emotive music and no less than three firework displays all worked together to heighten the spectacle.

The final chapter of the six-month extravaganza was attended by His Highness Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, His Excellency Sheikh Nahayan bin Mubarak Al Nahayan, Minister of Tolerance and Coexistence and Commissioner General of Expo 2020 Dubai, and Her Excellency Reem Al Hashimy, Minister of State for International Cooperation and Director General, Expo 2020 Dubai.

HE Sheikh Nahayan, Minister of Tolerance and Coexistence said: “We were honoured to have welcomed millions of visitors from all around the world, as the UAE has always been a place where all people meet. Throughout Expo 2020 Dubai’s six months, we had the honour of meeting many delegations, officials, and visitors. We celebrated with national days here – at the heart of Expo 2020 Dubai – on our beloved UAE’s land; the land of tolerance, coexistence, and peace. Among our most important guests were the generations of the future, particularly hundreds of thousands of our visitors, who were hosted by the Expo School Programme. They are the agents of positive change that we want for a more sustainable, safer, better world for all.

“We have learned a lot together, and we have proved that humans are of one essence, and one fate. We have come together at an extremely difficult time, the likes of which the world has not seen, embodying the strength of human will, at its finest, and made Expo 2020 Dubai a symbol of hope.”

A children’s choir kicked off proceedings with Ishy Bilady, the UAE National anthem, before the handing over the flag to the next World Expo hosts: Wakamiya Kenji, Minister for the World Expo 2025, and Yoshimura Hirofumi, Governor of Osaka Prefecture.

As guests and performers gathered in the garden of Al Wasl one last time, celebrated cellist Yo-Yo Ma gave an emotional performance of Gabriel’s Oboe followed by Going Home, before Al Wasl Dome was transformed into a galaxy of stars.

With singers and the Firdaus Orchestra performing the Expo 2020 Dubai theme song, This is our Time, an undeniable highlight of the show was the underwater scene with dancers waving huge swirling blue sheets which were then opened – in perfectly synchronised fashion – to reveal the 192 flags of the participating countries, creating a circle of flags representing the world and everyone standing together.

Mira Singh, the young star of the Expo 2020 Dubai opening ceremony, was again the heartbeat of the show, responsible for returning the ring with its magical powers to where it originated, to be ready for the next generation. Her journey included flashbacks of Expo 2020 Dubai’s highlights, including fleeting sequences of Al Adiyat: The Story of a Boy and His Horse, the Flying Piano, yoga at Surreal, the Expo Explorer’s final journey, dancing with Opti the robot, and an astronaut flying into space from Journey of the 50.

As the huge golden ring descended from the top of Al Wasl Dome, Grammy award-winning singer and songwriter, Norah Jones, appeared at a grand white piano to sing As Tears Go By. With another round of spellbinding fireworks, pop icon Christina Aguilera rounded off the show in spectacular fashion, belting out a stunning rendition of The Greatest Showman’s A Million Dreams.

Given the theme of the show, it was no surprise that the ‘VIP guests’ were made up of public and private school children from across the UAE. All aged between seven and nine, the pure, unadulterated joy on their faces throughout the one-hour performance was as stirring as the performance itself.

All UAE residents ages 18 and above who purchase an Expo 2020 Season Pass or Family Package before 14 August will be entered into a draw for the chance to win a prized place for themselves and a guest at the star-studded Opening Ceremony on 30 September 2021, with headline acts to be revealed soon. Fifty lucky winners will be announced first week of September via Expo 2020’s social-media channels, followed by a personal invitation to attend the ceremony.

The breathtaking culmination of almost 10 years of planning and preparation for Expo 2020, the Opening Ceremony will feature stunning visuals and world-class acts, and will take place at Al Wasl Plaza, an architectural marvel featuring world's largest 360-degree projection surface.

The ceremony draws inspiration directly from Expo 2020’s theme of ‘Connecting Minds, Creating the Future’ and its three subthemes, joining humanity’s journey of Opportunity, rising to the highest heights of Mobility and exploring the spectrum of Sustainability.

Mohamed Al Ansaari, Vice President – Communications, Expo 2020 Dubai, said: “This is a great moment of joy, pride and optimism for all of us. The UAE is a country where people of different languages, religions and race live together in harmony and we are thrilled to welcome the rest of the world to be part of this inclusive journey. A milestone moment that ties in with the UAE’s Golden Jubilee, the Opening Ceremony marks the realisation of our vision and hard work.

“We look forward to welcoming the winners of our draw to join the making of a new world in a dynamic work of unfettered imagination. We are also proud to share our all-encompassing events and entertainment programme that guarantees that no two days will be the same at Expo.”

Expo’s stellar global entertainment line-up includes – so far – Oscar-winning AR Rahman’s pioneering women's ensemble the Firdaus Orchestra; Bollywood sensation Sonam Kapoor; celebrated Emirati singer Ahlam; the famously slick Russian Bolshoi; and the compelling Expo Beats programme – a monthly music festival.

Sports fans will have the opportunity to witness the world’s largest Brazilian jiu-jitsu lesson, get to grips with exciting football-based sport teqball, meet their sporting heroes, and sign up to one of the many complimentary runs, fitness activities and wellness events.

With up to 60 live events a day – including film nights, poetry readings, art activations, musical concerts, cultural tours, parades and interactive journeys for all ages – as well as more than 200 food and beverage options, the site will be alive with sounds, rhythms and flavours from across the globe.

One day will not be enough – Expo’s Season Passes, Family Packages and Multi-Day Passes will ensure visitors make the most of everything the world’s biggest cultural gathering has to offer.

in collaboration with Cartier
Expo 2020 Dubai has reaffirmed its commitment to gender equality and women’s empowerment, unveiling creative content and programming for the Women’s Pavilion in collaboration with Cartier, and reminding the world that only through the full and equal participation of women in all fields can a more equitable and just world be built.

The Women’s Pavilion’s exhibition, titled “New perspectives”, will honour the significant and often forgotten contributions of women, demonstrating that when women thrive, all of humanity thrives.

Her Excellency Reem Al Hashimy, UAE Minister of State for International Cooperation and Director General, Expo 2020 Dubai and Cyrille Vigneron, President and CEO of Cartier International, discussed Expo 2020’s role in offering a global platform to empower women and girls and to drive awareness of the Sustainable Development Goal of gender equality and women’s empowerment during a conversation with Becky Anderson, anchor for CNN.

A diverse community of creators and artists have contributed to the pavilion’s design and curation:
