Nairobi Governor by-election suspended following petition filed by Sonko
The Nairobi Governor by-election has been suspended pending determination of a petition filed by impeached county boss Mike Sonko.
High Court Judge Antony Mrima, in a ruling delivered on Monday, said Governor Sonko as well as the Nairobi County Assembly presented important arguments which he certified as urgent hence it was necessary to halt the by-election process and hear them first.
Nairobi County Assembly lawyer Ndegwa Njiru and Sonko’s legal team both expressed satisfaction at the ruling, further stating that the matter should be heard by more than one judge.
Judge Mrima will now issue a ruling on whether the matter will be heard by a bench on January 14, 2020.
Lawyer Ndegwa also stated that Sonko had nominated Ann Kananu to be his deputy governor hence arguing that should the Kenyan citizen who went to court to oppose the nomination drop the case, then Kananu should be sworn in as the new Nairobi Governor.
The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) last month set February 18, 2021 as the date for the by-election to replace Mike Sonko as Nairobi Governor following his impeachment.
IEBC Chairperson Wafula Chebukati, in a gazette notice, directed political parties intending to participate in the by-election to submit the names of the persons contesting in their party primaries.
Chebukati also directed political parties intending to present candidates in the election through direct nominations to submit the list of persons nominated on or before Monday, January 11, 2021.
“A public officer who intends to contest in the by-election shall resign from public office within seven (7) days of the declaration of the vacancy,” read the notice.
“The Commission shall publish, in the Gazette, the names of the persons contesting in a party primary and the date of the party primary within seven (7) days of receipt of the names of the candidates.”
The days for the nomination of political party candidates and independent candidates for the by-election were set on Monday, January 18 and Tuesday, January 19, 2021.

In a screenshot she shared on her insta-story, Ms Muigai said her husband has been sharing cute baby videos with her, and the one she had posted was the sixth video she had received from him.
Anerlisa added that she now understands why Ben Pol has been doing what he has been doing.

This comes many months after it was rumoured that the two were already pregnant, and expecting their first child, but it turned out to be untrue.

The love birds then made their Union official in 2020 after they held a secret white wedding in Tanzania.
The union has also had its fair share of ups and downs as there have been reports of the two parting ways multiple times, but none of that has held any water.
She left Citizen TV , Ebru TV and K24 in search of something she would be passionate about but she is back.
Michelle Morgan made her TV debut at Citizen TV to wild chatter on Twitter due to her good-looks, poise and elegance.
But before we could get used to her she left Citizen in a rush because she felt that her ‘soul was dying’ when doing business reporting as she had zero passion for it. Attempts to move from her business segment to another area which she would be passionate about proved futile as there were simply no opportunities at Citizen TV.

Michelle later resurfaced at Ebru TV which she quit again because she felt that it wasn’t working anymore when it came to what the station expected vs. what she was able to give. She later joined K24 before leaving to host an extreme sports Programme called Xtreme Outdoors Africa (XOA). Her split with K24 was amicable.
“I resigned as a news anchor at K24 in a very positive light. It was a very amicable separation. In my career as a news anchor, I cultivated love and passion for outdoor activities. It is what I love. I love adrenaline, I love extreme activities and this is the next chapter.” She said on XOA’s YouTube channel.
About a year after leaving K24 Michelle made a silent comeback to the station as a host for a show called ‘Jam Sessions'. She is now officially a prime-time news anchor for the K24 Evening Edition.

Inooro TV news anchor Muthoni wa Mukiri has called it quits from the Royal Media Services-owned station.
The sassy news anchor announced her departure from the station on Friday said that the five years she has been at Inooro have been amazing.
Muthoni Mukiri went on to say that the journey has now come to an end, as she thanked all who have supported her through it.

Muthoni added that she believes that when one door closes, another surely opens, promising to let her fans know where her next workplace will be.
She noted that as they wait to know about her next destination, the screen siren said that her fans can find her on her YouTube channel.

Information is power and lack of it is dangerous, especially for those living in insecurity-prone areas in Kenya’s northern region where network connectivity is still a challenge. This normally makes it hard for residents to get crucial services which are mostly concentrated in the towns.
It is for this reason that banditry cases in far flung areas are reported at least a day after they happen, as security officers and residents have to travel for many kilometres to climb on trees and hills to make calls to government agencies.
Suspected Al-Shabaab militants have on several occasions destroyed telephone masts in Mandera and Wajir counties in order to disrupt local communication, making it hard for police to seek reinforcements in time and prevent subsequent crimes.
Herders in far flung areas in Merti and Garbatulla in Isiolo County have on several occasions lost their livestock to diseases as they lack information on the county government’s vaccination programmes.
Again, for lack of information on weather, many families get displaced when their houses are marooned by floods.
Expand scope
While the three local radio stations that broadcast in Swahili and Borana play an important role in sharing of crucial information, their scope does not cover the entire Isiolo County, making many residents miss out on information that could have saved their lives and their sources of livelihoods.
In efforts to bridge the gap and complement the efforts made by the radio stations, a philanthropist and a resident of Isiolo, Abdulhakim Abdulrahman, now plans to start a community radio stations that will cover the entire county’s over 25,000 square kilometres.
The radio station, which will broadcast in Somali, Kimeru, Turkana, Borana and Samburu languages, aims at giving voice to residents of the far flung areas. It will also preach peace between the local communities and those in neighbouring counties.
Promote local culture
Mr Abdulrahman said the station will, apart from providing employment to local residents and raising awareness, promote local culture and provide training opportunities for youths in journalism for them not to indulge in drug and substance abuse.
“It will provide a platform for residents and the marginalised communities in the far flung areas to share their concerns and push for their interests,” he said, adding that the radio station will run programmes on women, children and youths rights, health and talent.
By residents telling their diverse stories and sharing their positive experiences, he said, youths will be empowered to be self-reliant and desist from involvement in crime and promiscuous behaviour.
“Our people will receive useful information on the government programmes and offices they can find assistance from as well as business advice and encouragement,” Mr Abdulrahman said.
He added that the station will endeavour to refrain from politics by all means.
Platform for youth
Talented youths will also be given platform to showcase their prowess and hone their skills.
Ms Anab Kassim, an activist, said the radio station will go long way in ensuring that residents in remote areas access information just like those in urban centres.
“In most cases, they are left out in key decisions and this (radio) will make them be at par with those in towns,” said Ms Anab.
The radio station will also assist in eliminating female genital mutilation, which still remains prevalent in the county, among other outdated practices, she said.
The station, which will be based in Isiolo town, will go on air in January 2021.

Tanzania President John Pombe Magufuli has attempted to reconcile two of the country’s leading Bongo Flava artistes Diamond Platnumz and AliKiba.
Magufuli is eyeing a second and final five-year term in office and ahead of the country’s general elections slated for later in 2020, his handlers have elected to engage both Diamond, AliKiba, and Harmonize to entertain crowds during the rallies.
These three musicians, who reportedly don’t see eye to eye, came face to face at the weekend and a jovial Magufuli explained, tongue-in-cheek, that he is one of the few people who can make this possible.

“You see AliKiba and Diamond here, sitting together and smiling. That shows how (the ruling party Chama Cha Mapinduzi) CCM is strong,” explained the Head of State.
He added: ” This is the Tanzania I am proud of, the one we all want to see. I am so happy today. Are you?”

At that point, Diamond and Kiba stood up and clapped to the excitement of those in attendance.
But the two artistes did not face each other and despite standing almost next to each other, did not shake hands.
The President added he was happy to see Harmonize also sit next to Diamond, despite a misunderstanding between the two musicians, which culminated in the later unceremoniously quitting the Wasafi Records in 2019.

AliKiba insists he doesn’t associate with Diamond because his colleague consistently disrespects him.
Diamond on his part, suggests AliKiba is just but a hater of his fame.
