The Light, Mr. And Miss Autism Kenya 2021 Crowning Event

The backdrop of the Coronavirus Pandemic continues to have a deadly social-economic impact on various communities in Kenya. Among the most adversely affected are children living with autism and other neurodevelopmental disorders, as the lockdown measures have disrupted not just supply chains but also critical therapy services for children in dire need of it.

Many children who had achieved major milestones in the past three years have regressed as a result of the lack of therapy services, that Ready Aiders Foundation, a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) under Mr. Kenneth Apopa with Therapy centers in Mathare, Kawangware and Kajiado and Step Up 4 Autism,a Community Based Organization (CBO) under Madam Ruth Tenai, with a therapy center in Mathare, hosted the Fourth Light Mr. and Miss. Autism Kenya event as part of the commemoration of World's Autism Awareness Month usually the whole of April whereby the Day is celebrated on April 2 every year since 2007 in all United Nations (UN) Member States.

The Light, Mr. and Miss Autism Kenya event is a beauty pageant and talent show in honor of persons living with Autism Spectrum Disorder and other neurodevelopment disorders in Kenya.

The main objective is to showcase the talents of people in the spectrum and provide an opportunity for society to come together in recognition of their unique abilities, talents, and challenges.

At an event that took place on Saturday, 17th April 2021 at Sportsview Hotel, Kasarani,

Nairobi County Woman Rep, Hon Esther Passaris addressed the event via zoom as it was a virtual event and the fact that she was out of the country.

The women representative who was the chief guest emphasized the need for acceptance and inclusion. She highlighted the amazing projects she has been doing through the National government affirmative action fund to furnish and equip over 17 classrooms for learners with special needs in Nairobi.

She Promised for continued support to all Projects relating to autism with the use of the National Government Affirmative Action Fund (NGAAF) in the Entire Nairobi county.

Senator Dr. Getrude Musuruve Inimah,also emphasized on the need for the National Government to support Autism,which as a Nominated Senator representing Persons with Disabilities (PWD),promised to push for proposals in the Senate Assembly.

Russian Covid-19 Vaccine SPUTNIK V finally AUTHORIZED IN KENYA-a partnership with The Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF, Russia’s sovereign wealth fund)

SPUTNIK V AUTHORIZED IN KENYA

Moscow, March 10, 2021 – The Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF, Russia’s sovereign wealth fund) announces the approval of the Russian Sputnik V vaccine against coronavirus in the Republic of Kenya.

Sputnik V has been registered under the emergency use authorization procedure. It is now approved for use in 47 countries globally with total population of over 1.2 billion people.

Sputnik ranks second among coronavirus vaccines globally in terms of the number of approvals issued by government regulators.

Sputnik V had been approved earlier in Russia, Belarus, Argentina, Bolivia, Serbia, Algeria, Palestine, Venezuela, Paraguay, Turkmenistan, Hungary, UAE, Iran, Republic of Guinea, Tunisia, Armenia, Mexico, Nicaragua, Republika Srpska (entity of Bosnia and Herzegovina), Lebanon, Myanmar, Pakistan, Mongolia, Bahrain, Montenegro, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Gabon, San-Marino, Ghana, Syria, Kyrgyzstan, Guyana, Egypt, Honduras, Guatemala, Moldova, Slovakia, Angola, Republic of the Congo, Djibouti, Sri Lanka, Laos, Iraq and North Macedonia.

Kirill Dmitriev, CEO of the Russian Direct Investment Fund, said:

Sputnik V is approved in 47 countries around the world with more registrations expected in coming weeks. It is truly a vaccine for all humankind and one of the best solutions to fight the pandemic.”

Sputnik V has a number of key advantages:

Efficacy of Sputnik V is 91.6% as confirmed by the data published in the Lancet, one of the world's oldest and most respected medical journals; it is one of only three vaccines in the world with efficacy of over 90%; Sputnik V provides full protection against severe cases of COVID-19.

The Sputnik V vaccine is based on a proven and well-studied platform of human adenoviral vectors, which cause the common cold and have been around for thousands of years.

Sputnik V uses two different vectors for the two shots in a course of vaccination, providing immunity with a longer duration than vaccines using the same delivery mechanism for both shots.

The safety, efficacy and lack of negative long-term effects of adenoviral vaccines have been proven by more than 250 clinical studies over two decades.

The developers of the Sputnik V vaccine are working collaboratively with AstraZeneca on a joint clinical trial to improve the efficacy of AstraZeneca vaccine.

There are no strong allergies caused by Sputnik V.

The storage temperature of Sputnik V at +2+8 C means it can be stored in a conventional refrigerator without any need to invest in additional cold-chain infrastructure.

(Reuters) - Moderna Inc’s COVID-19 vaccine was authorized by U.S. regulators on Friday, the second inoculation against the new coronavirus to get a regulatory green light in the United States and the first approval for Moderna’s shot worldwide.

The following is what we know about the race to deliver vaccines to help end the coronavirus pandemic that has killed 1.65 million people worldwide:

WHO IS FURTHEST ALONG?

U.S. drugmaker Pfizer and German partner BioNTech are the COVID-19 vaccine trailblazers.

On Nov. 18, they became the first in the world to release full late-stage trial data. Britain was the first to approve the shot for emergency use on Dec. 3, followed by Canada on Dec. 9 and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Dec. 11. Several other countries including Saudi Arabia and Mexico have also approved it.

The European Medicines Agency (EMA) is due to complete its review of the shot by Dec. 21 and India is accelerating its review.

WHO WILL APPROVE MODERNA NEXT?

Moderna became a close second to Pfizer in many countries after it released a full data analysis for a late-stage trial on Nov. 30 showing a 94.1% efficacy rate for its vaccine. Canada is weighing approval now and the EMA will do so on Jan. 6.

WHO ELSE IS IN THE RUNNING?

Britain’s AstraZeneca is seeking approval for its vaccine in Britain after announcing interim late-stage trial data on Nov. 23. It had an average efficacy rate of 70% and as much as 90% for a subgroup of trial participants who got a half dose first, followed by a full dose.

However, it is not clear how the regulator will deal with the different dosages in the efficacy data in its assessment. While India is conducting an accelerated review, it has asked for more data. AstraZeneca is also in discussions with the EMA, which is conducting a rolling review of the vaccine.

U.S. drugmaker Johnson & Johnson plans to deliver trial data in January 2021, teeing it up for U.S. authorization in February if its shot is effective. It reduced the enrolment target for its clinical trial to 40,000 volunteers from 60,000 on Dec. 9, potentially speeding results which are tied to how quickly participants become infected.

U.S. firm Novavax is running a late-stage trial in Britain with data due in the first quarter of 2021. It expects to start a large-scale trial in the United States this month.

France’s Sanofi and Britain’s GlaxoSmithKline, however, announced a setback on Dec. 11 in their attempts to develop a vaccine. The drugmakers said it showed an insufficient immune response in older people in mid-stage trials and that they would start a new study in February.

WHAT HAPPENS IN THE TRIALS?

The companies typically test their vaccines against a placebo - typically saline solution - in healthy volunteers to see if the rate of COVID-19 infection among those who got the vaccine is significantly lower than in those who received the dummy shot.

HOW ARE VOLUNTEERS INFECTED?

The trials rely on subjects becoming naturally infected with COVID-19, so how long it takes to generate results largely depends on how pervasive the virus is where trials are being conducted. Each drugmaker has targeted a specific number of infections to trigger a first analysis of their data.

HOW WELL ARE THE VACCINES SUPPOSED TO WORK?

The World Health Organization ideally wants to see at least 70% efficacy. The FDA wants at least 50% - which means there must be at least twice as many infections among volunteers who received a placebo as among those in the vaccine group. The EMA has said it may accept a lower efficacy level.

WHAT ABOUT RUSSIA AND CHINA?

While Pfizer’s shot was the first to be rolled out following the publication of full Phase III trial data, Russia and China have been inoculating their citizens for months with several different vaccines still undergoing late-stage trials.

Russia said on Nov. 24 its Sputnik V vaccine, developed by the Gamaleya Institute, was 91.4% effective based on interim late-stage trial results. It started vaccinations in August and has inoculated more than 100,000 people so far. India plans to make 300 million of the shots next year.

China launched an emergency use programme in July aimed at essential workers and others at high risk of infection. It has vaccinated about one million people as of mid-November using at least three shots - two developed by the state-backed China National Biotec Group (CNBG) and one by Sinovac Biotech.

Sinovac said on Nov. 18 that mid-stage trial results showed its CoronaVac shot triggered a quick immune response and interim data from its late stage trial could come this year.

The United Arab Emirates, meanwhile, said on Dec. 9 that one of the CNBG vaccines was 86% effective based on interim results from a late-stage trial in the Gulf Arab state.

Among those going into self-isolation are European Council chief Charles Michel, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and OECD Secretary-General Angel Gurría, all of whom met President Macron this week.

Mr Sanchez has tested negative but, like Mr Macron, will work remotely from quarantine.

Portuguese Prime Minister António Costa, 59, has cancelled all official trips, and is isolating and awaiting test results, after a working lunch in Paris with President Macron on Wednesday.

Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo and Luxembourg's Prime Minister Xavier Bettel too are self-isolating following contact with the French president.

In a statement Mr Bettel wished Mr Macron a "speedy recovery".

Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin has tested negative for Covid-19 but will limit his contacts, a spokesperson said.

French Prime Minister Jean Castex, 55, and parliamentary speaker Richard Ferrand, 58, are also self-isolating, their offices confirmed.

Mr Castex, who is not showing any symptoms and has tested negative, was due to introduce the government's Covid vaccination policy in the Senate on Thursday - now Health Minister Olivier Véran is doing it instead.

France this week ended a six-week national lockdown, replacing the measure with a curfew to help deal with soaring cases.

Mr Macron last week attended a two-day European Council heads of state summit, finishing on Friday.

However, the French president is considered to have become potentially contagious as of Monday evening, a senior EU official told the BBC.

All sanitary measures were observed during last week's meeting and the council has not been informed of any other participants testing positive, the source added.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel wore a mask at the summit and tested negative for the virus on Tuesday, German officials said after hearing the news about President Macron.

A French presidential spokeswoman confirmed that all of Mr Macron's forthcoming trips, including a scheduled visit to Lebanon on 22 December, had been cancelled.

Analysis box by Hugh Schofield, Paris correspondent

The Elysée is doing everything to project an image of business as usual. Already President Macron is back at work, and a meeting with his finance and foreign ministers has gone ahead as planned - though with the visitors in an adjacent room.

It's being emphasised that the workings of government have already been radically adapted for Covid - with video conferences now the norm - so unless the president takes a turn for the worse no-one will notice much of a difference.

And meanwhile - as with any ordinary citizen - the trace-and-test system has kicked in, and numerous dignitaries foreign and domestic have been told the bad news that they have to self-isolate.

The message is clear: Emmanuel Macron may be the president of France - but for the purposes of the virus he is a human like any other. So he will behave according to the rules.
